Name Vanessa Smith
Team Women's Basketball
Year Senior
Major Anthropology
High School Hathaway Brown School
Hometown Twinsburg, Ohio
Athletic Accomplishments:
A senior on the women's basketball team, Smith was a starter on last year's squad that became the first team (men or women) in Ivy League history to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The senior was also a valuable member of Princeton's 30-0 regular season during the 2014-15 season. During that year, the Tigers won the program's first ever NCAA Tournament game and climbed to No. 13 in the USA Today Top 25 poll, the highest mark in Ivy League history.
Off the Court:
Vanessa is involved in many things off the court such as an intramural supervisor at Dillon Gym, a Dorm Assistant in upperclassmen housing, the Undergrad Anthropology Group and a Student-Athlete Wellness leader. One of the most important groups that Smith is involved with is the Varsity Student Athlete Advisory Committee (VSAAC).
Â
Charged with enhancing the student-athlete experience at the university, Princeton's VSAAC provides a student voice within the athletic department regarding both athletic and academic issues while working to strengthen the relationship between student-athletes, the athletics department, university administration and faculty.
Â
The VSAAC meets once a month with the athletic administration and twice a year with President Christopher L. Eisgruber to discuss issues that face student-athletes. This year, the group is working a Diversity Inclusion Initiative and social media platforms to get information about games to the entire student body.
Â
Vanessa on Vanessa:
"I didn't want to just do basketball and classes," said Smith. "I wanted to be involved in other things on campus. These groups round out my experience here at Princeton. "It's a cool group (VSAAC) to be a part of because we do make a difference and make a prominent impact on student-athlete's social life. I'm happy to be a part of the VSAAC.
