Walked onto the soccer team as a sophomore and is now the backup goalkeeper.
Off the Field:
Is a volunteer tutor at a prison once a week, teaching a philosophy class. Prior to that, he tutored one-on-one in prisons. In addition, he also does is an activist on campus as a member of SPEAR (Students for Prison Education and Reform), trying to make prison reform a bigger focus on Princeton's campus.
Seitz on Seitz:
"I've played soccer basically my whole life, but I walked on the team in my sophomore year, and it's been like finding a new family. In terms of getting involved in volunteer activities, my freshman year I had some extra time so I decided why not tutor, sounds like an interesting experience to get off campus and do something good. After that it sort of developed into a passion, and realized that there's a real need for this.
"Teaching in prison allows me to interact with people I otherwise wouldn't interact with. It challenges me as a teacher and a person. It acknowledges that I'm part of a community that's bigger than just the college campus. My service has thus been an integral part of my Princeton experience. It lets me put my ideals into action, and it informs everything else I do.
"Criminal justice reform might be the most pressing civil rights issue of our generation, because we imprison people at unprecedented rates, and while this is one way for me to get a new perspective on this broken system, it also gives me a chance to interact with people who I'd otherwise never interact with. Gives me the chance to help people and allows me to feel like I'm able to make a difference, which has been really rewarding for me personally."
