Riya founded Commit2Change Princeton, the campus chapter of of Commit2Change, a nonprofit organization based in New York City that works to empower orphan girls in India through education and finance. Her goal for Commit2Change Princeton is to provide a means for students to directly help the Indian orphanages through specific mentorship and outreach programs. Among their efforts is the Orphanage Mentorship Application Program, in which students review applications for girls applying to study in the U.S. through either email or Skype calls. She is also working on creating bracelets that we will send to the Indian orphanages, symbolizing financial independence and security, which is a step toward empowerment. Riya is a member of the business team of Princeton Innovation, where we work to fundraise and plan business proposals on new technology and life science research. Off campus, Riya spent last summer teaching English to over 200 students in the rural Ecuadorean town of Mindo, and she also volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, meeting weekly with her nine-year-old "little sister."
Riya on Riya:
"Through my time in Ecuador, I realized that what makes me happy more than academic and athletic success is helping others. I've never been as happy from winning tournaments as I have from helping people. By initiating this organization on campus, I hope to make my time at Princeton more than my own academics and athletic experiences; I want to make impacts that help others become successful."
