WEST POINT, N.Y. – With Kevin Kelley and Jackson Martin scoring bookend goals, the #13 Princeton men's soccer team downed Army, 2-0, on the road in West Point on Tuesday.
With the win, Princeton closes out its three-game road stint with a record of 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in Ivy play. Army falls to 3-3-4 on the season and remains 1-1-1 in the Patriot League.
"We persevered tonight against a very good Army team who put us under a lot of pressure, especially in the second half. We defended well, and thanks to opportunistic goals from Kevin and Jackson we were able to secure the win." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
How It Happened
Army was able to press and take two shots in the first two minutes of the game, before the Tigers took control of the game and immediately started to get to work in the attacking end.
In the eighth minute, a long ball from Dash Papez found Kelley in a one-on-one battle with Army keeper Collin Gilbert. Picking the ball off Gilbert, Kelley launched the ball with one touch, finding the back of the net to put the Tigers up early.
The Tigers continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the half, and despite Army earning three corners and coming up with a few dangerous moments, the 1-0 score would stand at the break.
Coming out of the half, it was Army who would generate some momentum and pressure the Tigers.
Keeping the game in the Tigers' end through the 70th minute, the Black Knights took three shots on goal, where Tiger keeper Andrew Samuels was there to make the stop each time.
Regaining some control, Princeton began to press again with urgency as they looked for another goal. The first shot of the half for Princeton came from the feet of Hormozi in the 77th, who sent it high.
In the 84th, Hormozi found the ball at midfield and threaded the needle to Martin in the box, who sent the ball around Gilbert and into the goal to double the Tiger lead.
Undeterred, Army continued to counter, taking a shot that went just inches wide in the 88th minute.
But as the clock ran out, the Tigers were able to solidify the win, and the shutout, taking the 2-0 victory in West Point.
