Chattanooga, Lehigh Top Tigers as Florida Trip Comes to a Close
March 15, 2023 | Softball
The annual spring trip closed Wednesday for the Princeton softball team with a 7-6 loss to Chattanooga and a 5-1 loss to Lehigh in Madeira Beach, Fla.
Chattanooga took a 5-0 lead with three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth. In the third, the Mocs used two walks and two hits while benefiting from some wild pitches as the rain came. An inning later, after a brief delay, Chattanooga used an Olivia Lipari double to follow up on two singles.Â
Princeton got on the board in the top of the fifth when Sophia Marsalo homered after a Lauren Murphy walk, and Chattanooga got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a Kaili Phillips solo homer to lead 6-2.Â
Princeton made it 6-3 in the sixth when, after an Adrienne Chang base hit and a walk to Grace Jackson, a ball off the bat of Cate Bade was thrown wide for an error, allowing pinch runner Courtney Harrison to score.
In the seventh, Princeton tied it up with walks to Julia Dumais, Allison Ha and Chang, and Jackson doubled two home to make it 6-5. A Bade ground ball brought the tying run home, but Phillips homered for the second time on the game to open the bottom of the seventh and win it for the Mocs.
In the Lehigh game, the Mountain Hawks scored all five of their runs across the first three innings. Emily Cimino hit a two-run homer in the first, and in the second inning, three hits and a walk added up to two runs and a 4-0 lead. A leadoff walk in the third inning came around to score to make it 5-0.
Princeton got its run in the bottom of the seventh. Marsalo doubled to lead it off and came home three batters later on a Serena Starks single.Â
Princeton will open Ivy League play Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader against Yale at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field.
