Dartmouth Defeats Baseball in Doubleheader
April 16, 2022 | Baseball
Hanover, N.H. — Princeton was dealt a pair of defeats to Dartmouth in its series-opening doubleheader this afternoon. The Big Green took game one, 6-2, and stormed out to an early lead which they maintained for an 11-6 victory in game two.
After a tough weekend against Cornell, Brendan Cumming bounced back with a big day at the plate. Across both games, he went 6-for-9 with three RBI and three runs scored. Matt Scannell also continued to terrorize Ivy League defenses with three RBI, moving his season tally to 24—good for second among Princeton hitters.
Catcher Carlos Abello also had a solid showing in game one. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In a game two pinch-hit appearance he drew a walk.
Game 1
Princeton opened the scoring in the first game. With two runners in scoring position, Scannell grounded out to second, allowing Cumming to score from third.
Dartmouth tied the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, then took a 3-1 lead after the second frame with a two-run double down the line.
Jackson Emus buckled down from the third to the fifth inning, striking out six batters in those innings (he struck out seven and walked two on the day). However, Dartmouth took advantage as he started to run out of gas in the bottom of the sixth as it loaded the bags and plated three to take a 6-1 advantage.
An RBI single from Cumming pulled one back in the top of the seventh, but the Tigers weren't able to muster any further offense as the Big Green held on for a 6-2 victory.
Game 2
Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead with five runs on five hits and two errors in the first inning. Princeton pulled one back courtesy of an RBI single by Scanning in the top of the third, but four runs for the hosts opened up a big, 9-1 deficit with a third of the game played. The game slowed down with both teams unable to score from the fourth to the sixth inning.
Dartmouth added a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-1 before an offensive surge by the Tigers. A single by Nick DiPietrantonio, a batter hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases. Jordan Kelly drew an RBI walk to plate DiPietrantonio, then Cumming smacked a double down the left-field line to drive in two more to make it 10-4. A sacrifice fly from Nadir Lewis and an RBI single from Scannell rounded out a five-run inning which made it a 10-6 ballgame.
Unfortunately, the Big Green plated an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Tigers were unable to mount another rally as Dartmouth took game two, 11-6.
The two teams will face off once more on Sunday with the series finale slated to start at noon.
