Seitz '17 Selected as Recipient of Three Prestigious Honors
June 19, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Steffen Seitz of the Princeton men's soccer team was recently awarded three prestigious awards. After being selected for both the Fulbright Scholarship and the Puttjammer Fellowship this spring, Seitz chose the Puttkammer Fellowship, a two-year nonprofit fellowship to set up and maintain prison teaching programs.
"The opportunity to continue working in criminal justice reform is too good to pass up, and it presents a clear trajectory to law school" Seitz said.
On graduation day, Seitz was also honored as the recipient of the 2017 Gregory T. Pope '80 Prize for science writing. The Pope Prize is awarded annually to a graduating senior for outstanding articles or papers on scientific topics written for a broad audience. A committee consisting of The Council for Science and Technology members and science writers selected his winning essay "The Wine Menu From Hell: The Schmidt Insect Sting Pain Index"
"It is great to see such a selfless and humble person receive such incredible honors," Princeton head coach Jim Barlows said. "As a back-up keeper and walk-on, Steff devoted so many hours to helping our team improve. He made our training sessions better and he made our team culture better. And he did it while writing two theses, teaching inmates at a local prison, and excelling in a demanding academic curriculum. Princeton Soccer is lucky to have had Steff on our team, and we wish him all the best in the future."
Seitz was the first student-athlete to be featured in Princeton Athletics "Achieve, Serve, Lead" series. During his time at Princeton he was a volunteer tutor at a prison, teaching a philosophy class once a week, and doing one-one-one tutoring. An activist on campus as a member of SPEAR (Students for Prison Education and Reform), Seitz and the organization hoped to make prison reform a bigger focus on Princeton's campus.
