Cortes Runs Win Streak To Six, But #5 Drexel Fends Off Upset Attempt With 6-3 Win Over Princeton
February 08, 2017 | Men's Squash
Cody Cortes ran his win streak to six matches with another dramatic five-game thriller, while Gabriel Morgan added a will 3-2 win of his own, but those results wouldn't be enough for the Princeton men's squash team to upset No. 5 Drexel Wednesday night at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
Tenth-ranked Princeton, which has pushed the fifth-, sixth-, eighth- and ninth-ranked teams in either 5-4 or 6-3 losses over the last four weeks, made Drexel earn its midweek win Wednesday night on the Ivy League Digital Network. Morgan and classmate Shehab Thabet both posted wins in the first shift to earn Princeton a 2-2 split heading into the second half of the match.
The Tigers would have their opportunities to pull off the upset, as Princeton took the opening game in the majority of the final five matches. Cortes continued to find one way after another to keep his win streak alive, as he won the final two games 11-9 and 12-10 to improve to 8-3 on the year. He has now won six straight matches, and four of the six have been 3-2 wins over higher-ranked teams.
Junior Komron Shayegan pushed Noel Solomon to extra points in the fifth game before falling 15-13, while the freshman duo of Adhitya Raghavan and Henry Parkhurst both went four games in losses at the No. 1 and No. 9 spots, respectively.
Princeton will return to the court Friday evening when they head to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on Cornell.
