Brian Ebke '09 Returns To Princeton, Joins Two-Time Reigning Ivy Champion Open Rowing As Assistant Coach
August 09, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Open
Brian Ebke '09, a former Princeton heavyweight rower who has achieved significant success coaching the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, is returning to his alma mater as the assistant coach for the two-time reigning Ivy League champion Princeton open rowing team.
Ebke replaces Kate Maxim, who was named the head coach at Oregon State earlier this summer. He will join former teammate Steve Coppola '06, who enters his sixth season on the staff; both helped the Tigers win three Ivy titles in the last four years.
Ebke began working at the Oklahoma City Boathouse in 2009, and he took over as the varsity girls head coach in 2011. Since then, he has placed four boats in grand finals at Youth Nationals, including winning the lightweight 4+ in 2014, and he was named the Director of Rowing for the Oklahoma City program two years ago. He led his lightweight junior women to gold at the 2015 CRASH B Indoor World Championship.
"We are thrilled to welcome Brian back to Princeton and bring his expertise into our staff," said Ivy League Head Coach of the Year Lori Dauphiny. "He did an amazing job in Oklahoma City, and his experiences both there and as a rower here at Princeton should provide great leadership for our rowers."
Besides his experience with Oklahoma City, Ebke brings experience at both the national and collegiate level. He has served as a U.S. National Team High Performance Camp head coach for two years, and that followed three years of coaching experience at the Development Camp.
Ebke also served as the graduate assistant coach at the University of Central Oklahoma.
"I'm so excited to return to Princeton as a member of the open women's rowing staff," Ebke said. "It's been a dream of mine to coach here, and to be able to fulfill that dream and give back to the University is an opportunity that I relish. Lori, Steve, and the rest of the coaches here at Princeton are an impressive group who have brought championship level success to the program; I'm excited to join them and add my own unique perspectives to the mix. I am looking forward to getting to work and helping to guide the next generation of Tiger rowing champions."
Ebke had a successful rowing career, which included a win at the 2004 CRASH B Indoor World Championship, as well as a Top-5 finish as a member of the 2004 Men's 8+ Junior National Team. He won four medals at the Youth National Championships between 2002-2005, and then rowed four years at Princeton.
