No. 12 Tigers Battle Two Top-25 Teams At Bedford This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers continue their loaded schedule as the No. 22 Rutgers Scarlet Knights and No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions come to Bedford Field this weekend.
The Scarlet Knights meeting is on Friday (4 p.m.) while the Nittany Lions make the trek on Sunday (12 p.m.). Each game will be featured on the Ivy League Network, while the contest on Sunday will streamed on the Princeton Athletics Facebook account.
What's Going On?
- For the third straight season, Princeton lost its season-opener to North Carolina, dropping to a 2-0 decision to the No. 1 Tar Heels on Friday.
- Despite three saves from Grace Baylis and an incredible defensive stop from MaryKate Neff, the Tigers were held off the scoreboard.
- Delaware used a three-goal burst in the first 12 minutes of the game to drop Princeton, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon.
- Clara Roth led the Tigers with five shots while the Tornetta sisters and McCarthy each had at least two shots each. Baylis made five saves in the loss.
- Julianna Tornetta was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week after scoring twice against Delaware. Tornetta leads the team with four points in two goals and is tied for third in shots.
- The Tigers battle nine 2016 NCAA Tournament teams along with the other three squads from the Final Four on its 2017 schedule.
- As of now, the Tigers have 10 nationally ranked teams on their schedule.
- Seven of the team's first eight games come against ranked opponents. The first weekend for Princeton without a top 25 opponent comes Oct. 14-15 when it travels to Brown and Northeastern.
- No. 2 UConn (Oct. 8) is the last ranked squad to appear at Bedford Field.
- Princeton leads the all-time series, 21-3-1.
- The Tigers have won 15 of the 17 home meetings vs. the Scarlet Knights.
- These two teams have not faced each other since 2006.
- Rutgers' last win in September of 1995, a 2-1 decision in Piscataway.
- Princeton is currently on a nine-game winning streak against Rutgers.
- The Scarlet Knights are 4-0 this season, their best streak to open a season since 2008. That was also the last time, Rutgers was ranked.
- Rutgers has a win over an Ivy League school, Penn, taking down the Quakers, 1-0.
- Daphne Groothuis leads the team with six goals and 15 points.
- Linde van Schaik is second on the squad with 10 points, leading the unit with four assists.
- Princeton outshot Rutgers in the half 8-2 and got on the scoreboard at 27:49 when Holly McGarvie scored the eventual game winner. Her team-leading eighth goal of the season came on a Tiger corner.
- Just over a minute into the half, Sarah Reinprecht scored on a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the season, and her second successful stroke, after she was fouled in front of the goal.
- Kristin Schwab added the game's final goal four minutes later to cap the scoring. Nicole Ng fired the ball into the circle and Wentko tried to play it away but Schwab gathered it in and scored her third goal of the season.
- The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series, 26-11.
- Penn State and Princeton have split their last six meetings.
- Each team earned a victory in their two meetings last year. Penn State won in University Park during the regular season, 4-2. However, the Tigers got the ultimate revenge with a 2-1 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
- These squads have faced off 11 times in the postseason including three battles in the NCAA quarterfinals and six matches in the first round.
- The Nittany Lions are 4-0 in 2017 with three victories over ranked opponents.
- Penn State jumped four spots in the latest NFHCA Coaches' Poll and sit No. 3.
- Moira Putsch leads the team with 12 points, adding four goals and four assists.
- Gini Bramley also has four tallies for the Nittany Lions.
- Jenny Rizzo is 4-0 on the season with 1.02 GAA and 21 saves.
- Behind a three-point outing from Cat Caro '16 and a six-save performance from Grace Baylis, Princeton advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight season with a 2-1 victory over Penn State.
- Caro's goal in the 61st minute proved to be the game-winner.
- Trailing by two, Penn State turned up the offensive intensity, sending five shots towards Baylis over the next five minutes. The freshman stood her ground making two saves while Nicole Catalino also came up with a defensive save.
- The Nittany Lions broke through with 3:28 remaining off a corner. Aurelia Meijer cut the home team's deficit to one as she nailed one into the cage with assists from Kirsten Gochnauer and Moira Putsch.
- The Princeton defense managed to hold Penn State without a shot the rest of way to earn the win.
- The Tigers went 12-8 in 2016 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season, receiving the program's first at-large bid to the tournament.
- One of the greatest moments in program history, Sophia Tornetta laced a laced a shot into the back of the cage as time expired to send the Tigers to the Final Four for the first time since 2012 with a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Virginia.
- No. 8 Delaware ended Princeton's season in the national semifinals as Esmee Peet scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining, giving the Blue Hens a 3-2 decision. Delaware would go on to win the national championship.
- The Tigers had five players selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams. Caro and Ryan McCarthy were picked for the all-region first team while Maddie Bacskai, Tornetta and Elise Wong were honored with second team accolades.
- Caro topped off her fabulous senior season with a Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I All-America First Team accolade. She had a personal-high 18 goals and 47 points. She registered a point in 15 of the team's 19 games and finished the season eighth in the country in goals (.95) and 13th in points per game (2.26).
- In January, Katie '13 and Julia '14 Reinprecht retired from the United States National Field Hockey team.
- The two sisters retire as two-time Olympians, helping the U.S. to fifth place in the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since the 1996 summer games in Atlanta. They also won two gold medals at the Pan American Games (2011, 2015). Wrapping up their careers, Katie finished with 166 caps while Julia had 154 caps.
- Kathleen Sharkey '13 helped the national squad to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup in mid-August. She scored five times, leading the tournament in scoring.
- Princeton continues to be well-represented with USA Field Hockey as four Tigers were named to the U.S. U-21 National Team and two more to the National Development Squad.
- Maddie Bacskai, Julianna Tornetta, Sophia Tornetta and Elise Wong were picked to the U-21 squad while Cat Caro '17 and Ryan McCarthy were selected to the development team. Princeton's four representatives on the U-21 team are the most in the country.
