PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior captain Ryan McCarthy played hero with two goals in the final 2:56 as the No. 16 Princeton Tigers rallied for a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Yale Bulldogs at Bedford Field.
Down a goal. Three minutes to go. Penalty corner for Princeton. Who else would get the shot in this situation?
The Tigers kept peppering Yale's goalie Sydney Terroso with three more shots, before getting their 11th corner of the night as the clock ran out.
Carlotta von Gierke inserted to Julianna Tornetta, who stopped it for McCarthy. The senior captain had the first shot blocked, but dove for the loose ball that dribbled into the back of the cage for the game-winner.
The Tigers were looking to get back in front as they sent two more shots towards Terroso, but were sent away.
In the 17th minute, Yale received a corner attempt and took full advantage as Imogen Davis knocked in the rebound, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage.
Princeton ended the first half with a 9-3 shot advantage, but trailed at the intermission.
Head coach Carla Tagliente's team took the first nine attempts of the second half, forcing Terroso to make three saves during that span that lasted 22 minutes. After a timeout by Princeton with eight minutes to go, it continued the offensive pressure with two more corners before McCarthy's game-tying tally.
McCarthy completed the contest with 13 shots while Princeton held a 26-4 advantage in that category. The Tigers also had 10 more penalty corners, holding Yale to just one. Nine different players took a shot in the game for the Tigers.
The senior captain has been on fire in the last two seasons, collecting 22 goals in her last 29 games after scoring 12 in the first 37 games of her career.
Princeton improves to 5-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Ivy League and is on a four-game winning streak. Yale drops 4-4 and 0-2 in the conference. The Tigers get back on the road at No. 7 Syracuse on Sunday at 2 p.m.
