Olivia Kane scored her first career goal Saturday against Yale.
No. 16 Princeton Opens Ivy Play With 2-0 Win Over Yale
September 23, 2017 | Women's Soccer
The leading active career scorer for the 16th-ranked Princeton soccer team and the newest one to score each notched a goal in a 2-0, Ivy League-opening win over Yale Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
Junior Mimi Asom's 25th career goal came in the 14th minute when she weaved through the Yale defense in the 18-yard box, turned and buried a try inside the left post. Rookie Olivia Kane took a pass along the endline from senior Vanessa Gregoire in the 85th minute and fired it in, doubling the Princeton lead.
Asom is the 10th player in program history to reach the 25-goal mark, and just four more goals will make her the sixth-leading scorer in program history.
In all, Princeton outshot Yale 14-5 and 6-2 on goal. The win marked the fourth year in a row the Tigers have gone unbeaten against Yale, going 3-0-1 over that stretch.
For now, the win gives Princeton three Ivy League standings points headed into back-to-back weekends on the road, first next Saturday at Dartmouth before a trip to Brown the following Saturday. In between is a trip to Bucknell a week from Tuesday for the Tigers' final non-league game.
With the assist on Kane's goal, Gregoire notched her 24th career helper, putting her just two back of fellow Canadian Diana Matheson '08 as well as Lauren Lazo '15 for the Tigers' career record.Â
The shutout behind keeper Natalie Grossi and the back line was Princeton's seventh clean sheet of the season, the first time since the 2000 season that Princeton had at least seven shutouts in its first nine games. The program had only two such seasons prior to 2000, its first two varsity years in 1980 and 1981.
