Princeton Upsets No. 21 FDU, 2-0
September 23, 2017 | Men's Soccer
TEANECK, N.J. (9/23/17) - Having opened the season against the No. 8 ranked team in the nation, the Princeton Tigers weren't going to be intimidated facing No. 21 Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday night. And it showed. Princeton dominated nearly every facet of the game, outshooting FDU 19-7 with an 11-3 edge in shots on goal and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks to earn a 2-0 victory.
Senior Harry Heffernan did some major work after receiving the ball on the right side, winning a battle for the ball with his defender before dishing it out to freshman Kevin O'Toole, who's defender stranded him to help his teammate. O'Toole launched the ball into the box and junior Will Lentz used a header to get his first goal of the season in the 80th minute. Lentz had checked into the game in the 68th, replacing junior Jeremy Colvin.

Â
Senior Daniel Bowkett made it 2-0 in the 86th minute when he split two defenders and shot low on Jason Waite into the right corner. Bowkett entered the game with two assists to his credit.

Â
Princeton didn't waste any time as defender Bobby Hickson delivered the first shot on goal in the first minute. The Tigers took three more shots as the Knights struggled to get anything past the Princeton defense, taking 22 minutes until they took a shot. Princeton was out-hustling the FDU defense and in the first half alone had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
One of the best opportunities to break the scoreless game came off of one of those corner kicks in the 31st minute. On the right side O'Toole put the ball directly into the 18-yard box where Colvin used his size to get a head on it but Jason Waite made arguably the save of the game to preserve the score.
Â
Off the bench senior James Reiner had two shots on the goal with a terrific chance in the 39th minute when he found himself all alone but Waite just saved the shot as it deflected off his cleat. Less than a minute later Waite stopped a Reiner chance on a cross, coming up big for the Knights in his season debut and finished with eight saves.
Sophomore Jacob Schachner stopped three shots in his first career shutout.
