What A Start! Tigers Fight Off Two Match Balls, Stun Boston College In 2017 Opener
September 01, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Sabrina King may have preferred a slightly more relaxed start to the 2017 season, but she'll certainly take this one too.
King, the two-time reigning Ivy League Coach of the Year, watched her Tigers post major rallies in both the fourth and fifth sets and claim a stunning 3-2 win over host Boston College in the opening match of the 2017 Beantown Challenge. The Tigers, who fought off two match balls in the fifth set before taking the 16-14 win, attempted another rally in the nightcap, but they fell 3-1 to North Texas.
Princeton will complete the Beantown Challenge Saturday at 2 pm when it takes on Bryant College.
PRINCETON 3, BOSTON COLLEGE 2
Playing without All-Ivy outside hitter Devon Peterkin, who is dealing with a preseason injury, Princeton turned to the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year to carry the majority of the offense. Sophomore Maggie O'Connell led the Tigers with 22 kills and added four blocks, while junior middle Caroline Sklaver posted a career effort with 16 kills and a .682 hitting percentage from the middle position.
Sophomore Natasha Skov added nine kills in the first start of her career, while senior co-captain Maddie Huber recorded a career-best 28 digs. The setter tandem of Jessie Harris (39 assists) and Claire Nussbaum (20) paced an offense that hit .238 for the match, and .318 in the tense final set.
Princeton got there by climbing out of a 20-14 hole in the fourth set, which ended when O'Connell killed three straight balls and then added a block to win the fourth. Princeton raced out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth, but the Eagles claimed the lead midway through and served for the match at 14-12. O'Connell came up big once again with two straight kills, and Skov and Sklaver combined for a block to earn Princeton the match ball.
Sklaver concluded her career effort in style with a solo block to clinch the match.
NORTH TEXAS 3, PRINCETON 1
After O'Connell took 48 swings in the opener, King rested her in the nightcap, and North Texas was able to take advantage early. Princeton trailed 2-0, but began to battle back once again; the Tigers took the third set 25-20 and got out to a lead in the fourth, but they weren't able to hold off the Green in a 29-27 final-set loss.
Skov posted a career-best 22 kills, while Sklaver built on her brilliant morning effort with a 10-kill, six-block showing. Freshman middle Clare Lenihan added 10 kills in her first career start, while Kelly Matthews added six kills and 15 digs.
