Koelzer '17 Re-Signs with Riveters for 2017-18 Season
July 24, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
Recent Princeton graduate Kelsey Koelzer '17 has re-signed with the New York Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League, a contract for the 2017-18 season.
The No. 1 overall selection in the 2016 NWHL Draft, Koelzer became the first player to sign a late season contract, when she signed on with the Riveters in early March as the team made a push for the playoffs. She played in one playoff game before the Riveters were eliminated.
"The Riveters are such a great organization with amazing fans, players and staff, so I'm really excited about spending the entire season with them," Koelzer said. "I'm also very proud to be part of the NWHL as it continues to grow in so many ways. I learned a lot in the brief time I spent with the Riveters last season. Having the experience now with the speed of the game will help me when we get back to work come October."
A two-time Patty Kazmaier finalist and first-team All-America, Koelzer was an ECAC Hockey three-time selection. The 2016 ECAC Best Defenseman of the Year, she was a finalist for the award again in 2017. The 2016 Ivy League Player of the Year finished her career playing in 128 games and is just the third defender in Princeton history to reach 100 points, scoring 39 goals and 61 assists. She had an incredible 203 career blocks and finished with a +46 on-ice rating. As both a junior and a senior, Koelzer ranked second nationally in points per game for a defender.
Koelzer has also been a part of the USA Hockey organization, attending national team camps and festivals and was a member of the 2017 Under 22 Select Team.
