Andersen's World Cup Blog Part 3
July 25, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
And just like that, an incredible adventure has come and gone. Basically an entire month of intense lacrosse training and playing has passed. After pool play, we defeated Italy in the first round of bracketed play in an exciting 13-12 win, which included myself faceguarding Kerrin Maurer, my future coach and an exceptional athlete. And after losing to the Czech, we handily defeated the Netherlands 14-1 and took care of Germany, solidifying a 13th place finish with a 14-8 win. Our win against Germany was capped off with Emma Whelan, the kindest Irish player alive, scoring her first international goal with 30 seconds left, bringing our whole team to tears.
A festive Friday night celebration for Ireland lacrosse was followed by a Saturday that included watching England shock Australia in double overtime and the US handle Canada for another Gold Medal win in the pouring rain. Despite landing in three places lower than the last World Cup, I know the entire Ireland lacrosse program was proud of our composure, spirit and energy throughout the entire tournament. And that was what we celebrated. We celebrated the friendships we developed with Germany, the Netherlands, Colombia and other programs. We celebrated unbreakable bonds developed on and off the field and we celebrated the spread of lacrosse internationally.
I can't believe how fast this has all flown by. I can't believe the amount of friends I have made from all over the world in the course of 10 days, I can't believe how much better my attacking skills have become, and I can't believe how sad I am that this experience has ended. The World Cup is more than a tournament. It is a cultural experience unlike any other, it is a passionate undertaking for every player and coach involved, and it is something that will sit in my heart forever. More than anything, it is something that I am incredibly proud to have been a part of and will continue to try to be involved with in the future.
For anyone, fan, player, coach or otherwise, here's a word of advice. If you can, go see a world cup. Go watch some incredible lacrosse and go meet some incredible athletes. And until then, I'll see you at Class of 1952 Stadium in the spring, back in my Tiger uniform.
