Seven Tigers Open U-23 World Championships In Bulgaria
July 19, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Members of the Princeton heavyweight, open and women's lightweight rowing teams will begin competition at the prestigious U-23 World Rowing Championships Wednesday, July 19, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. A total of seven Tiger rowers from the three teams will try to reach the medal stand when the competition concludes Sunday, July 23.
The Tiger heavyweights have four rowers representing three different boats and three different countries this week. Rising sophomore David Bewicke-Copley and 2017 graduate Matt Benstead will join forces in the Great Britain M8+. Bewicke-Copley (5 seat) and Benstead (bow) were in the same Princeton 1V that upset California and finished fourth at the 2017 IRA national championships.
Rising senior Leo Toch will stroke the USA M4-, while rising junior Dan de Groot will stroke the Canada M4x this week. Toch was a key member of the Tigers' gold medal-winning 2V at Eastern Sprints this past spring, while de Groot won bronze in the 3V.
The open duo of Claire Collins and Emily Kallfelz has become a familiar pair of names to Princeton rowing fans. They were the only freshmen in the 2016 Ivy League champion Princeton open 1V, and they returned to that boat this past spring to help the Tigers repeat as Ivy champions while setting a Cooper River course record. Collins, who earned second-team All-America honors in 2017, will row in the 2 seat for the USA W8+, while Kallfelz, an all-region honoree, will represent the USA in the single sculls.
Hopkins, a rising sophomore on a lightweight women's squad that returned to the IRA medal stand for the first time since 2011 this past spring, will row in the 3 seat for the lightweight W4x. Hopkins competed in the 2016 U-23 Worlds in the lightweight women's double.
