The Princeton men's track & field team look to bring the Ivy League Outdoor Heps title back to Old Nassau as the 2017 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships get underway this weekend, May 6-7 at Yale.
The Tigers look to make it two-in-a-row, after winning the indoor Heps they have their sights set out the outdoor title. Princeton has won outdoors 16 times and four times in the last six years, including 2015 when it claimed its seventh triple crown in program history.
The meet begins on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the first event of the decathlon. The men's hammer at 1:30 p.m., will be the first event that is scored, while the first track qualifying race will be at 3:05 p.m., the 1500. Both days action will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network.
SPRINTS & HURDLES
Princeton has two talented champions returning in the sprints and two strong freshmen sprinters in the mix, the Tigers have a mix of potential scorers in the sprint events. Junior Carrington Akosa, who was been a 10-time scorer at Heps, was the runner-up in the 100 last spring and placed third in the 200. This past indoor season he won the 60 before an injury kept him from the 200 final – an event in which he was the two-time reigning champion. Akosa has the fourth-best time in the league in the 200 at 21.57 and owns a PR of 21.09. He hasn't run a 100 this spring but does have a PR of 10.49 in the event. Sophomore Charlie Volker has scored five times at Heps and was third in the 100 last spring. He has the fourth best time heading into the weekend in the league with a 10.75 and has a PR of 10.56. He ran the 200 just once this spring and hit 21.85. Freshman JC Colangelo and Joe McGrath can challenge as well, as each has top-20 times in the league.
Â
Freshman Joey Daniels is the league leader in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran a 14.04 at the Texas Invitational and was fourth indoors in the 60 hurdles.
Â
Last year, the Tigers dominated the 400-meter hurdles and return nearly the entire corps, led by senior captain Greg Leeper. Leeper and junior Spencer Long have the best times in the league in the event, with Long posted a league-best 52.61 and Leeper a 52.61. Leeper won the event last year, with Long third. Sophomore Christian Fryer-Davis was fifth a year ago and has a season-best of 55.26 to rank in the top 15 in the league. Freshmen Gab Montefalcone has the sixth best time at 53.16 – making the 400 hurdles an event to watch.
Â
Five of the top 20 times in the league in the 400 belong to the Orange & Black. Senior Ray Mennin has the second-best time with a 48.00 and has been a scorer in five times, including a win in the indoor 400 in 2016. Junior Josh Freeman ran a PR of 48.02 this season to rank fourth in the league. Sophomore Cole Bransford, freshman Connor Matthews and senior Jabari Johnson will challenge for scorer spots as well.
