The Princeton women's track & field team had four of five Tigers advance on Day 1 of the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Ky. Seniors Julia Ratcliffe and Allison Harris both punched their tickets to Eugene in the hammer throw and the pole vault. Senior Katie Hanss and sophomore Anna Jurew both advanced to the next round in their middle distance races.
Ratcliffe had to wait until the final flight of the hammer throw but it took just one throw to take the lead over the 39 throwers that had gone before her. Ratcliffe tossed a 65.15 (213-9) on her first attempt. She did even better on her third-round attempt, hitting 65.42 (214-7) to win the East hammer and qualify for her fourth NCAA Championships. The 2014 NCAA Champion in the event, Ratcliffe was the runner-up in 2015 and took last year off to train for the Olympics. Her worst finish at NCAAs? When she placed 11th as a freshman. Ratcliffe owns the Princeton, Ivy League and New Zealand national records in the event with throws over 70 meters.
Harris punched her first ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Harris captured the final qualifying spot in the East with a 4.10 (13-5.25). It's a mark that eight other vaulters attained, but based on passes and attempts, she is one of four that advances to Eugene with the height. Jumping eighth in flight 2, Harris passed on the opening height of 3.80 (12-5.5). She cleared 3.95 (12-11.5) on her second attempt and 4.10 (13-5.25) on her second attempt. Harris competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, finishing in 10th place. Harris owns both the league and program records in the event.
Hanss advances to the quarterfinals of the 1500. She nabbed one of the top 24 places to quarters on Saturday. She qualified on time after taking eighth in heat 4. She posted a 4:24.18 (50.72, 1:11.77, 1:11.87, 1:09.83). Freshman Madeleine Sumner ran 4:40.05 to finish 44th. The quarterfinal is slated for a 6:30 p.m., start on Saturday with the top 12 advancing to Eugene.
Jurew advances to tomorrow's 800 quarterfinal. She clocked 2:08.52 in the first round to take fourth in heat three. She is one of sixth that advances on time, her second-fastest time of the season. The 800 quarterfinal will be at 6:30 p.m., on Friday.
Also competing tomorrow is senior Lizzie Bird. She is making her fourth appearance in the NCAA Regional steeplechase. That event is set to begin at 8:20 p.m.
