Miami, Los Angeles, Honolulu: Men's Hoops Team Goes Beyond Coast-to-Coast in 2017-18 Slate
July 05, 2017 | Men's Basketball
New York, Boston and Philadelphia are annual stops on the Princeton men's basketball schedule. But in December 2017 alone, the Tigers will visit Miami, Los Angeles and Honolulu, highlighting a 2017-18 schedule that goes beyond coast-to-coast and presents a test for a Tiger team coming off an NCAA Tournament opener against ACC Tournament runner-up Notre Dame that went down to the final possession.Â
The Tigers are also coming off their Ivy-best 27th league title. During that run, the 2017 Tigers achieved the league's first 14-0 Ivy season in nine years while doing so as a program for the first time since 1998. Princeton then added the inaugural Ivy League Tournament title.
The official preseason polls won't be out until later in the fall, but early prognostications have several could-be top-25 teams either on the Tiger schedule or as possible opponents at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii. A USA Today article in May had USC, which will host Princeton on Dec. 19 and could face again in Hawaii, as the nation's preseason No. 8 team. Miami, Princeton's Dec. 2 opponent at the home of the Miami Heat and another possible Hawaii matchup, was No. 16. Butler, which will be Princeton's season-opener at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Nov. 12, was No. 23. A CBS Sports article, also in May, had USC at No. 9 and Miami at No. 11.Â
Along with USC, Miami and Princeton, the Diamond Head Classic field includes Akron, Davidson, Hawaii, Middle Tennessee and New Mexico State.Â
USC, New Mexico State, Miami, Butler and Middle Tennessee were all NCAA Tournament teams a year ago, while Akron, Monmouth and BYU, the last two of which will be coming to Jadwin Gym in the season ahead, were in the NIT last winter.
Princeton's 2017-18 schedule is below. Updates to dates and opponents will be made below as they are available and will also be made on the 2017-18 schedule page.
