Ratcliffe Wins at Penn Relays in Historic Fashion

PHILADELPHIA (4/27/17) - Senior Julia Ratcliffe won the hammer throw championship on the first day of the 123rd Penn Relays at Franklin Field. She is the first women's collegiate hammer thrower to meet history to win three championships.
Ratcliffe, currently ranks second nationally with a throw of 68.05 (223-3) from the Sam Howell Invitational, the top mark in the East. In today's event she faced off against four other throwers in the top-25 nationally, including sixth-ranked Veronika Kannuchova (Florida State) and 11th-ranked Anette Echikunwoke (Cincinnati).
Ratcliffe had no trouble dispatching them with all of four of her countable throws better than their best. She threw to 62.85, 64.07, 65.37 and her best at 65.69 (215-6).
Kanuchova was second at 62.18 (204), while Echikunwoke was fourth at 60.71 (199-2).
Princeton sent outs its first distance medley relay of the season. The delay posted the fourth fastest time in program history at 11:16.41 in the Championship of America race. Senior Katie Hanss led off with a 3:30.52 in the 1200. Senior Elisa Steele clocked a 54.18 in the 400 while sophomore Jackie Berardo hit 2:10.41 in the 800. Senior Lizzie Bird closed with a 4:41.30 in the 1600-meter leg.
The all-time record was set at the 2013 Penn Relays, an 11:10.13 by Alexis Mikaelian '13, Cecilia Barowski '16, Kacie O'Neil '14 and Greta Feldman'13.
In the 3,000 meters, senior Alexandra Markovich finished 10th overall with a time of 9:43.02. Junior Melissa Reed was two places back as she improved upon her PR by nearly four seconds with a 9:45.80.
Princeton is slated to compete in two more Championship of America races at Penn Relays, the 4x1500 on Friday at 1:20 p.m., and the 4x800 on Saturday at 4:10 p.m.
