#5 Radcliffe Retains Class of 1999 Cup; #3 Women's Lights Turn Focus To Eastern Sprints
April 22, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The fifth-ranked Radcliffe women's lightweight rowing team avenged a loss at the Knecht Cup Saturday morning by defeating third-ranked Princeton on its home Charles River course. The victory gives the Crimson its sixth Class of 1999 Cup win in the most historic rivalry in the sport; Princeton holds the lead with 13 wins.
Radcliffe was able to get an early lead on the Charles, but Princeton kept contact throughout the race and pushed back on the Crimson at different points. Radcliffe never let the lead drop below two seats and held on to its advantage long enough to retain the Cup.
"Tip of the hat to Radcliffe for winning the very tightly contested race," head coach Paul Rassam. "I think we are a bit better than what we showed, particularly in the first 600 meters. We will be eager to show that next week at Sprints. That's the beauty of our schedule, if you win there is no time to be too happy and if you lose there is no time to hang your heads. Just need to get right back at it, chopping at the tree."
Radcliffe won each of its three races during the morning, but Princeton knows it will get another chance next weekend when the Eastern field heads to Worcester, Mass., for the 2017 Eastern Sprints. Princeton is looking for its first Sprints title since 2011, and its seventh in program history.
Varsity Eight
Radcliffe – 6:39.1
Princeton – 6:40.8
Second Varsity Eight
Radcliffe – 6:53.7
Princeton – 7:02.8
Third Varsity Eight
Radcliffe – 7:31.1
Princeton – 7:56.8
