WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (3/31/17) - The Princeton men's track & field team is in first place the first full day of competition at the Colonial Relays. Despite stoppages for rain delays, the Tigers scored 52 points and have a substantial lead on the other 37 teams.
Â
The Tigers started the meet earning 16 points in the hammer throw. Sophomore Adam Kelly won the event with a throw of 57.00 (187), hitting the mark on his third attempt. He was over 56 meters on his other four countable throws. Junior Gabe Arcaro was third at 52.59 (172-6) with that coming on his fourth throw. He tossed over 50 meters on four of his countable five throws.
Â
In the shot put, the tandem of senior Christopher Cook and junior Mitchel Charles combined for nine points. Charles was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 16.43 (53-11). His final attempt was also more than 16 meters at 16.33. Cook hit 16.26 (53-4.25) on his first throw, his only countable throw, but that was all he needed.
Â
An event the Tigers proved to dominate at Ivy Heps last spring, the 400 hurdlers were at it again today. The corps collected 13 points towards the team total, as all three finished in the one of the top eight scoring spots. Freshman Gab Montefalcone was third at 53.34, while junior Spencer Long was fourth at 53.84. Senior captain Greg Leeper took seventh with a time of 54.59.
Â
Freshman Joey Daniels who impressed during his first indoor season in the hurdles, proved it was no fluke as he finished the high hurdles in 14.30 to take second out of 47 competitors.
Â
Senior Josh Freeman, who ran a PR last weekend had another excellent run in the 400. He was third overall at 48.22, just one hundredth of a second out of second place to earn his team six points. Freshman Connor Matthews ran a PR of 49.13 to take 11th in a race of more than 70 competitors.
Â
Though he just missed a scoring spot, sophomore Franklin Aririguzoh ran a hot 1:52.33 in the 800 for a new PR.
Â
The Tigers will continue the meet tomorrow at 11 a.m. Also competing tomorrow is August Kiles in the pole vault at the Texas Longhorns Invitational.
