10th-Ranked Tigers Defeat No. 5 Brown In Strong 2017 Start On Lake Carnegie
March 25, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Open
Claire Collins made her collegiate rowing debut last season in a loss to Brown. She has experienced plenty of winning since then — including a dramatic Ivy title victory over Brown two months later — but she was still excited to help her newest teammates have a much happier introduction to the sport.
Collins, a sophomore in the Tiger Open 1V, helped 10th-ranked Princeton post a victory over fifth-ranked Brown by more than two seconds Saturday morning during the 2017 season opener on Lake Carnegie. With the victory, Princeton will return the Class of 1987 Trophy back to the Shea Rowing Center for the first time since 2013, and it extends the Tigers' series lead to 19-12.
"It was a great start to the season," Collins said. "Our base was solid. I was happy about our moves and our consistency in the middle of the race. We can definitely improve, but overall a good starting place.
"We have many things, technically and fitness wise, to help improve during the season," she added. "That was our first full piece. We will have many opportunities to improve. We are coming off of a great week of spring break training but we will get back to our lifting and normal spring schedule this week. We have big goals that we want to reach."
The same holds true for the rest of her team, and each of Princeton's three NCAA boats earned wins over Brown during a full morning of competition on Lake Carnegie. The 1V finished in 6:28.5 to win by 2.4 seconds, while the 2V finished in 6:45.9 to win by 2.7 seconds. The varsity four had the same margin (2.7) with a winning time of 7:36.0.
Brown earned wins in both the third varsity eight and the B4/C4 races.
"Brown is always a tough team, always great competitors," head coach Lori Dauphiny said. "When they come, I know we have our work cut out for us. The varsity race was outstanding, a tight race with all three boats going for it. I was very pleased with the depth of our team. The 2V and the 4 getting wins was very nice, and the other boats performed well. I was happy with the performance of the team as a whole."
The Tiger 1V, which followed its Ivy League title by a return trip to the NCAA finals last spring, lost a pair of All-American rowers to graduation, but head coach Lori Dauphiny has a handful of young rowers pushing the boat early this year. Two of those rowers are sophomores who were 1V members throughout the entire 2016 season — Collins and Emily Kallfelz.
"I have learned a lot this year," Collins said. "I was injured this fall, and I have been inspired by my team and have learned a lot about how to be a better athlete mentally and physically. This opening day we focused on being confident in our speed, versus last year when we went in a little timid and Brown was ready to fight. The confidence definitely helped us stay on the offensive today. We are always thinking about bringing up the level of our boat and constantly taking steps towards our big and small goals for the season."
The win was especially nice for a Princeton team that will spend the next four weeks on the road, a stretch that begins next Saturday morning against both Columbia and Clemson.
