Hompe Scores 200th Point as No. 9 Princeton Takes Down No. 8 Notre Dame 14-8
March 11, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
Senior Olivia Hompe tallied her 200th career point in a five-point game to lead No. 9 Princeton to a huge 14-8 win over No. 8 Notre Dame.
Princeton is off to a 5-0 start, it's best start since the 2008 season when the Tigers began the year 10-0.
Â
With 202 career points, Hompe now ranks seventh in all-time history in points, just three back from Lauren Simone '02, as she has passed both Theresa Sherry '04 and Amory Rowe '95 this season. Though Hompe had a 39-game goal scoring streak come to a close against Brown, Hompe kept her 59-game point scoring streak alive – having only been shut out in her career one time and that was her first career game in 2014.
Â
Freshman Tess D'Orsi tallied two goals and two assists, while sophomore Allie Rogers had two goals and one assist, junior Ellie McNulty scored twice, and sophomore Kathryn Hallett and junior Colby Channenchuk had a goal and an assist each. Senior Ellie DeGarmo made nine saves on 17 shots.
Â
Princeton outshot Notre Dame 34-22, won two more ground balls and four more draws.
Â
For 8-2 Notre Dame, Cortney Fortunato had three goals, while Molly Cobb and Savannah Buchanan had two apiece. Samantha Giacoone made 10 saves on 24 shots.
Â
After Fortunato scored the first goal of the game, the Tigers offense scored four straight to take a 4-1 lead at 18:54 as Hompe, D'Orsi, Rogers and McNulty each scored. Fortunato tallied her second midway through the half, but the Tigers added two more to stretch their lead to 6-2 at 12:16 with goals by Elizabeth George and Hompe's 200 career point. At halftime Princeton held a 7-4 edge.
Â
Princeton's lead expanded to 11-4 thanks to a four-goal run to start the second half, with Rogers, Sullivan, Chanenchuk and Hompe each scoring.
Â
The Fighting Irish wouldn't go away without, well a fight, as they tallied three straight to make it 11-7 at 13:46.
D'Orsi ended the Tiger's 13-minute drought with her 15th goal of the season, but Cobb quickly answered back off the next draw but that would be as close as Notre Dame would get, as Princeton added two more goals in the final four minutes.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, March 21 when they host Penn State at 2 p.m.
