Tigers Win Third Straight After 15-14 Battle with Loyola
March 01, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/1/17) - Princeton senior Ellie DeGarmo made a point-blank save on a free-position attempt by Megan Boepple with one second left on the game clock to hang on for the 15-14 win over Loyola on Wednesday night.
It was a back-and-forth battle, until No. 11 Princeton (3-0) took a six-goal lead with less than nine minutes to play. That lead evaporated thanks to a heavy hand at the draw control circle by Taylor VanThof, and the Greyhounds scored five unanswered to make it a one goal game with 1:31 to play.
After Bailey Mathis won the ensuing draw, Cami Whiteford - who had five goals - was on the end of a free-position attempt with 51 saves. It was DeGarmo coming up with a big save though the Greyhounds backed up to maintain possession. Working to the right of the goal, Hannah Savage had the ball picked off by DeGarmo. Officials called a turnover on DeGarmo, implying she spent too long in the crease, and VanThof got the ball on the right side of the arc. Trying to go to the goal, Princeton picked up a foul and it was Boepple to the fan for the free-position attempt that would not go thanks to the quick stick of DeGarmo, who finished with 11 saves.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Loyola (0-3) went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Princeton went back up 6-5 as Hompe scored twice and Tess D'Orsi once. Sabrina Tabasso put her team ahead by one with back-to-back goals before the Tigers scored twice in 45 seconds to make it 8-7 Tigers. Whiteford had the final goal as the half ended 9-8 in favor of the Tiers.
Princeton took a 6-1 run to take the 15-9 lead before Loyola responded.
For the second consecutive game, senior Olivia Hompe had a career-high seven-point game on six goals and one assist. The Inside Lacrosse National Rookie of the Week D'Orsi picked up a hat trick, while junior Colby Chanenchuk had a four-assist night. Sophomore Allie Rogers had three points, while junior Ellie McNulty and sophomore Elizabeth George picked up two points apiece.
Whiteford paced the Greyhounds offense her five goals and added one assist. Hannah Powers had three goals and one assist, while Tabasso scored twice. Kady Glynn started the game and made two saves on 10 shots before she was replaced late in the second half, when Princeton was up 8-7, by Taylor Caldwell. Caldwell stopped four of 11 in relief.
Princeton opens Ivy League play on Saturday, March 4 hosting Brown at 1 p.m.
