Steven Cook video feature | Achieve, Serve, Lead: Steven Cook
Away from the court, Steven Cook has fundraised for a hospital in Sudan and helped an anti-poverty organization in his native Chicago revamp its efforts. On the court, the senior captain is a two-time All-Ivy League honoree who leads the team in scoring this season.
For all of that, Cook has been named as one of five Division I players nationally on the Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches' Good Works Team. He will get a trip to Phoenix to be recognized at the Final Four and the NABC convention in April while also taking part in a community service project in the Phoenix area.Â
"Steve has embraced the academic experience and the challenges that have come with it, and has set a standard of organization and efficiency for his teammates and for all student-athletes at Princeton," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton men's basketball, wrote in nominating Cook for the award. "His grades fall within the range of the most accomplished Princeton students, no small feat given the demands of his athletic training schedule."
An economics major, Cook raised money for the Gidel Mother of Mercy Hospital in Sudan and has served as a business operations intern for the anti-poverty Heartland Alliance in Chicago, helping to reorganize the group's business operations systems at Heartland's health clinic.
The final 10 players - five from Division I, five from Divisions II, III and the NAIA - came from an initial pool of 181 nominees, and a voting panel of media members, former players and current and former coaches pared the pool to the final 10. Cook joins DePaul's Billy Garrett Jr., Iowa State's Monte Morris, Georgia Tech's Rand Rowland and Northwestern State's Sabri Thompson on the Division I team.
