Topatigh Nets Overtime Winner as Princeton Beats Clarkson 3-2
February 11, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Freshmen defender Derek Topatigh couldn't have scored his first career goal at a more opportune time. Wheeling around the back of the net, Topatigh fired in the game-winning goal at 1:58 in overtime to lift Princeton a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Clarkson at Hobey Baker Rink.
"You try not to think that much about point production, especially the defense, but definitely a weight off my shoulders and its nice to get a win for the boys," Topatigh said. "We've been working so hard lately so it's nice to have that work pay off these last few games."
Princeton is now 11-11-3 overall, its best record since the 2010-11 season, and is now in eighth place in the ECAC standings with a one-point edge on Dartmouth with four league games remaining in the regular season. The Tigers are unbeaten in their last six games, 4-0-2.
"We've worked hard," head coach Ron Fogarty said. "We've gone 11-5-2 since that 0-6-1 start and we've put ourselves in that position just by being consistent. To have the opportunity to have home ice is motivating."
Clarkson held a 2-0 lead through the second period before Princeton scored twice in the final 11:05 of regulation to force overtime.
The Tigers had momentum in the first period as they out shot the Golden Knights, 13-7 but freshmen netminder Jake Kielly turned away all 13 he faced.
Clarkson (13-13-4, 8-8-2) scored twice in less than six minutes apart midway through the second to gain a 2-0 lead. Princeton tried to break the puck out with a flip pass into the neutral zone that was grabbed by Aaron Throw at the second blue line. Sam Vigneault kept it in in front of the team benches with a centering pass to Troy Josephs, who pushed the puck in front of his defender and then split two more Tigers while shooting five hole on Phinney at 8:09.
Brett Gervais did a lot of work to get the Golden Knights their second goal. After taking a shot that rebounded off of Phinney's pad to the left side, Gervais down on his knees, shoveled in the rebound. Throw and Greg Moro earned assists on the goal.
Sophomore defender Josh Teves brought Princeton within one with a 5x4 power-play goal at 11:05 of the third. Sophomore Max Véronneau won a battle for the puck in the corner and sent it along the boards to freshman Jackson Cressey. Cressey delivered the puck to Teves at the left point and he buried one through traffic and past the glove of Kielly. Teves scored the game-winning goal over No. 18 St. Lawrence last night, but he wasn't through yet as he notched the primary assist on the game-tying goal at 16:10.
Véronneau sent the puck to Teves from the left point to the right and Teves aimed one on frame. The rebound came out to Ryan Kuffner who was positioned at the near post and he buried the rebound with just 3:50 remaining in regulation.
Kielly who was facing the Tigers for the first time in his career stopped 45 shots. Clarkson is now sixth in the league standings with 18 points.
Phinney earns his fourth career win over the Golden Knights with 37 saves.
Princeton looks to keep things rolling in its final road weekend of the regular season, Feb. 17 & 18 at Rensselaer and Union.
