Princeton Skates to 3-3 Tie with No. 1 St Cloud State
December 29, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton had the No. 1 team in the country St. Cloud State on its heels tonight as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie, in Game 1 of a 2 game series at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers had a 3-1 lead at 7:57 of the third period before two power-play goals by the sixth-best power-play unit in the country evened the game with 1:38 remaining in regulation.
Freshman netminder Ryan Ferland was named the first star of the game, thanks to his 37 save performance which included an incredible 14-save effort in overtime as the Huskies were hungry for the go-ahead goal.
Easton Brodzinksi stripped the puck from a defender deep in the zone and put St Cloud on the board with an unassisted tally at 13:42 of the first.
Senior David Hallisey, who became the first Tiger to score a goal in six straight games since 2009, after his streak though Dec. 8, got back at it tonight with his 10th goal of the season. Ryan Kuffner kept the puck to the outside but it missed a stick before Josh Teves circled to collect it as the Princeton power-play time was winding down. Teves faked a shot then brought the puck around the back of the goal and sent a pass across the paint to Hallisey on the doorstep and Hallisey one-timed it into the goal.
Senior Eric Robinson gave Princeton a lead with a wicked top shelf snipe on a give-and-go with new linemate Jackson Cressey. Hallisey earned the secondary assist on the goal, the only tally of the second period.
Junior Ryan Kuffner increased the Tigers' lead to 3-1 at 7:57 with a power-play goal, his 10th goal of the season. Teves at the left point found Max Véronneau on the right and he whipped the puck on goal where Kuffner was able to redirect it into the back of the net.
Entering the game, both teams had solid power plays, with St Cloud ranked No. 6 in the nation at 25.7 percent and Princeton not far behind in 12th at 23.4 percent.
With Princeton's power play at 1 for 5 and St Cloud sitting 0 for 4, they answered the bell, converting on its final two opportunities. The first game at 11:40, less than one minute into a Derek Topatigh roughing call as Blake Winiecki tipped in a shot from the point by leading scorer Jimmy Schuldt. After Jeremy Grande was called for tripping at 18:08, and down one goal, the Huskies got an favorable bounce when a shot by Schult ricocheted off the glass directly behind the goal and flipped over the line.
The Huskies were all over the puck in overtime, with a 14-0 shot differential but a number of spectacular saves by Ferland, including one without a stick, made the differnece.
Smith made 25 saves in net for the Huskies who move to 12-2-2 on the season. St. Cloud's blemishes this season are two losses to defending national champion Denver, an tie with North Dakota and now a tie with the Tigers.
The teams battle it out again tomorrow at 7 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink.
