Maggie O'Connell Helps Princeton Volleyball Make History; Ivy Playoff Set For Saturday At 7 pm
November 13, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Maggie O'Connell is now 2-for-2 in Ivy League championships during her brief but impressive career, and her efforts last weekend helped her earn Ivy League Player of the Week honors. That award helped the 2017 Princeton Tigers make league history, as no Ivy League women's volleyball team has ever had five different players earn Player of the Week honors.
O'Connell joined teammates Natasha Skov, Jessie Harris, Nnenna Ibe, and Caroline Sklaver as Ivy Player of the Week honorees this season, and O'Connell picked an ideal time to earn her award. The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year averaged 4.0 kills per set and hit .359 during a pair of matches, including a 3-0 win at Harvard that clinched a third straight Ivy League title for the Tigers. She was at her best against the Crimson, when she had 18 kills (6.0 per set) and hit .500 in the 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 win.
O'Connell added seven digs and three blocks during the weekend, and she is the only player in the Ivy League who ranks in the Top 10 in kills, points, and hitting percentage this season.
Next up for O'Connell and her Tiger teammates will be an Ivy League playoff match at Yale, which will be Saturday at 7 pm and determine which team receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The match will be streamed live, for free, on the Ivy League Network.
