O'Brien's Two Goals Rally No. 11 Princeton Past Upset-Minded Brown
October 07, 2017 | Women's Soccer
After knocking on the door for nearly 75 minutes, the 11th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team broke it down against Brown in a big way Saturday afternoon, getting a pair of Courtney O'Brien goals 56 seconds apart to spoil the Bears' upset bid and keep Princeton's winning streak going, 2-1.
Princeton gave up a goal for just the third time this season when Brown, which entered the day sixth in the nation in corner kicks drawn per game, converted on one in the 10th minute when Jennifer Caruso put in a ball the Tigers failed to clear.
Princeton ended up equaling Brown in corners 5-5, three fewer than Brown's season average entering the game, and outshooting the Bears 17-8 overall while each team put six on net.
But it wasn't until the 75th minute when Princeton's persistence at last resulted in a goal. Senior Natalie Larkin played a ball along the endline into the box, and after rookie Tatum Gee headed it down to keep it in bounds, sophomore O'Brien redirected it mid-air and past Brown keeper Christine Etzel to tie it up.
Less than a minute later, senior Mikaela Symanovich lofted a ball into the box that sophomore Abby Givens headed down only to have Etzel block it for the save, but O'Brien buried the rebound for the go-ahead.
The goals were O'Brien's sixth and seventh of the year, the second-most on the team behind classmate Abby Givens and her nine goals. Winners of five in a row, the Tigers, who remained perfect on the road this season at 6-0, will play at home for the first time since Sept. 23, hosting Columbia next Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at Roberts Stadium.
