Tigers Lose Heartbreaker in OT as Villanova is Awarded a PK
September 28, 2016 | Men's Soccer
In heartbreaking fashion, the Princeton men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to Villanova when the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick in the 99th minute.
"We have no choice but to put this behind us and get ready for Saturday because Saturday is such a a huge game," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "It's a disappointing game today. Villanova played well and had us pinned in a lot. We didn't do a good job of getting anything going in the attack today and eventually we paid the price for it."
A scoreless first half that saw not a single shot on goal for either team though Villanova's Andreas Bartosinski launched a free kick from 35 yards out off the cross bar in the 53rd minute. In the second half, both teams took three shots on frame. The first of the game was from senior Greg Seifert in the 61st minute when he took a header towards the upper left 90 where it was pulled down by Will Steiner. Nearly 30 seconds later senior Josh Haberman snuffed out a chance by Lucas Hodges as the Wildcats transitioned quickly. Seifert had another ball scooped up by Steiner in the 81st.
Haberman had two huge saves in the final minutes of regulation to preserve the clean sheet. The first was on Hodges in the 84th as he dove to the right on the slant, and the second was on a close range shot by Andres Camacho in the 85th.
Villanova had 17 shots to Princeton's 11. Haberman finished with four saves, while Steiner had three.
Princeton moves to 4-3 on the season, while Villanova is now 5-3-1.
"I thought we defended pretty well for stretches," Barlow said. "Our back four was solid. I don't think we conceded many good chances the whole game. From that standpoint I think we're pretty organized and solid."
Princeton begins the Ivy League season on Saturday when it hosts Dartmouth at 4 p.m., in the second game of a doubleheader with the women's program.
