Following a successful opening weekend that saw wins over Fordham and Villanova to help net a 2-0 record and an Ivy Player of the Week honor for Mimi Asom, the Princeton women's soccer team will head on the road for the first time on the new season when the Tigers go to Delaware Friday and Howard Sunday.
Princeton has started 2-0 in back-to-back years for the first time since 2003 and 2004, and Sean Driscoll is the second coach in program history to go 2-0 in each of his first two years (Bob Malekoff, 1980-81). If Princeton can go to 3-0, it'd be Princeton's best start since going 4-0 in 2004.
Princeton was included in the receiving-votes/others-considered section of the NSCAA top-25 poll (two poll points) and the TopDrawerSoccer.com top-25 poll this week.
Senior Tyler Lussi enters the weekend with 45 career goals, two off the program record held by Esmeralda Negron '05. Goalkeeper Natalie Grossi was the only rookie to start either game last weekend, going the distance in both.Â
Neither Delaware nor Howard is a new opponent with both having come to Roberts Stadium last season and Delaware getting a 1-0 win. The Tigers beat Howard 6-0 to open last season.
Delaware stands 0-4 so far this season with one common opponent to the Tigers so far. Princeton beat Villanova 1-0 last weekend in Princeton, and Delaware lost at Villanova 3-2 on Aug. 19.  Michelle McEnroe, who had the Blue Hen goal in Delaware's 1-0 win at Princeton last season, is back, as is goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos. Dani Kabat (two goals) and Jillian Vassallo (one goal) have accounted for all three of the team's goals this season while Rekos has been in goal for all four games.
From the Howard game last season, which was the first time the two teams played, Princeton returns all six of its goal scorers, including Natalie Larkin, Asom, Vanessa Gregoire, Haley Chow, Tyler Lussi and Beth Stella. Both Howard keepers from last season's game, Gabrielle Emilien and Mackenzie Diotte, are back with Diotte having started all four games so far this season. Howard opened 2-0-1 with one-goal wins over Cleveland State and Longwood around a tie against Mount St. Mary's. The Bison fell 4-0 at George Mason in its most recent outing Thursday to fall to 2-1-1 on the season.
Following the weekend road trip, Princeton will play in New Jersey twice next weekend, first at home Friday against Temple and then Sunday at Monmouth.Â
