Princeton women's track & field assistant coach Priscilla Frederick competing in the qualifying round of the women's high jump this morning. As the lone female representative from Antigua & Barbuda, Frederick did not advance to the final after closing out with a clearance of 1.89m (6-2.50) to finish 28th overall. Frederick cleared the opening height of 1.80 on the first attempt and then 1.85 on her third attempt. At 1.89, she made it over on her final attempt and watched as the bar wobbled but stayed in place. Only seven advanced to the finals after making it over 1.94 (6-4.50). Full Results
During the evening session at the track Princeton men's track & field assistant coach Robby Andrews had a heartbreaking result as he was disqualified in semifinal 2 after originally qualifying for the final as one of the top five finishers. It was a typical Robby Andrews style race - where he kept pace and hung near the back. At the bell, he was 11th but was in a good position along the outside. Along the back stretch is where he made his move. Spain's David Bustos went off the track - though he was not disqualified - on the final turn - and Andrews found himself boxed in with Canada's Philibert-Thiboutot on the outside and then Australia's Ryan Gregson squeezed between the pair leaving little room for Andrews to make a move down the stretch. He found a sliver of space on the inside between the rail and Ethiopia's Mekonnen Gebremedhin. Some jostling caused Andrews to step one foot outside the rail before he finished in fifth place at 3:40.25. The results were later changed to show that he had been disqualified and giving his spot to Uganda's Ronald Musagala citing Rule 163.4B. The US is appealing the decision (as of 10:40 pm ET)
The rule states:
An athlete shall not be disqualified if he
(b) steps or runs outside his lane in the straight, any straight part of the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump or outside the outer line of his lane on the bend,
with no material advantage thereby being gained and no other athlete being jostled or obstructed as to impede his progress.
Note: Material advantage includes improving his position by any means, including removing himself from a "boxed" position in the race by having stepped or run inside the inside edge of the track.
