Just before halftime of Wednesday's 6-1 victory over Japan, Kathleen Sharkey '13 drew a penalty corner for the Team USA field hockey squad. The shot deflected off the stick of Katie Reinprecht '13 and into the cage to ensure full momentum heading into the half.
Sound familiar? That was part of the formula that brought an NCAA championship to Princeton four years ago. Could it bring Team USA its first Olympic medal since a bronze medal in 1984?
Time will tell, but Team USA couldn't have asked for a better start to the 2016 Rio Games. Katie Reinprecht scored her second goal of the Olympics, Sharkey added a second-half assist and Julia Reinprecht was one of three Americans to play all 60 minutes in the third win of the Olympics for Team USA, which will be off for about 25 hours before returning to the field Thursday night on NBCSN.
Meanwhile, weather continued to wreak havoc at the Rodrigo de Freitas rowing venue, where all rowing was cancelled for the second time in the last four days. Five of Princeton's six rowers are scheduled to be back in action Thursday morning, with three looking to get into their respective gold medal finals.
Here is a look at the updated schedule for all Princeton rowers.
The five rowers in action will be part of a loaded Thursday of competition for Princetonians in Rio. Ten of the 13 Tigers — including both current student-athletes — will be in action. The first of the two rising seniors to compete will be Katharine Holmes, who will be part of the Team USA quarterfinal showdown with Romania in the épeé competition. Holmes fell in an overtime thriller during the individual competition Saturday, but she will begin her competition for a team medal at 9:30 am ET. Team USA will compete three different times during the day, with potential medal matches at 4:00 (bronze) and 5:30 (gold).
Holmes' classmate, Ashleigh Johnson, will lead Team USA back into the water polo competition with a 10:40 showdown against China on NBC. Johnson saved 11 of 15 shots in her Olympic debut, an 11-4 victory over Spain on Tuesday. China lost a tough 13-11 match to Hungary in its Olympic opener.
The field hockey team will make a quick return to the field, as it tries to stay perfect in group play with a 6:30 pm matchup against India. A win in that game could set up a Saturday showdown with Great Britain to determine the winner of Group B.
