Friday morning was thrilling. We began our day bright and early with a drive into Athens, where we stopped first at the Acropolis museum. We met up with our charismatic tour guide who talked us through Ancient Greek culture and history including the building of the city, construction and marriage practices (ee and Morgan Steelman '20 went through a marriage ceremony). After a quick coffee we started the trek up to the top of the Acropolis to see the Parthenon. We had sweeping views of Athens and got to see the ruins.
We then raced off to play with the Greek special Olympics soccer team. This was such a wonderful experience for the team. We each paired off and taught the young men some basic racket skills and showed them a video of us playing squash to explain the sport. We then broke into an impromptu soccer game with the team. Thankfully Ashley made it back onto the bus because a couple of the men wanted to keep her in Greece.
We then had a quick lunch in the city center before heading off to the squash courts to play matches with some locals. We played an assortment of men and women of all different ages and levels, all of whom put up a good fight during the matches and welcomed us to their country off court. We exchanged tee shirts as a memento of the experience. We ended the day with a team dinner at the hotel and got a good night's sleep in anticipation of an exciting day to come.
