Princeton University Athletics

Fellows Spotlight: Ramona Romero, Field Hockey
November 08, 2016 | Field Hockey, General
Ramona Romero
University Counsel
Fellow for Field Hockey
What do you do at Princeton?
I am the University's head lawyer. In that role, I provide counsel to the University's President and other senior academic and administrative officers on a broad range of legal and policy issues. The University is a large and complex entity, and many legal issues arise from its operations. As the General Counsel, I manage seven other lawyers and four administrative support professionals who work in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). My team and I provide advice on all kinds of legal issues, including questions arising from the University's management of campus facilities, it's research and teaching programs, and it's interactions with faculty, staff, and students.
How did you get involved in the Academic Athletic Fellows Programme?
One of the reasons I decided to come work at Princeton is because I am a true believer in its teaching and research mission, and in its commitment to service. My job helps further the University's mission, but does not involve regular contact with students. A friend recommended the fellows program as a way for me to contribute to the mission more directly, albeit in a small way, and I was delighted to accept an offer to participate
What's the most rewarding aspect of being an Academic Athletic Fellow?
I am a fellow for the field hockey team and I love being available to students as an informal sounding board and source of guidance and help if they need it. Over the course of my educational and professional career, I have benefited from the support and mentorship of many folks, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward through the fellows program. Also, personally, it is wonderful to have the chance to interact with some of the most talented, committed and promising young women in our country — I learn from them, and hope they can learn from me!
Carla Tagliente, head field hockey coach:
"Ramona and the other fellows play a critical role in enhancing the student-athlete experience here at Princeton. Their visibility and support of field hockey and all of the athletic programs helps foster a significant amount of goodwill between Athletics and the University. They are a tremendous resource in terms of best practices as a student at Princeton, and for developing a network of professional opportunities once they graduate."
