Princeton Athletics To Upgrade The Lobby Of Jadwin Gymnasium
November 10, 2016 | General
For nearly 50 years, the L. Stockwell Jadwin Gymnasium has been the main hub of Princeton Athletics, serving as the home competition venue for eight varsity teams, a practice facility for many others, the site of administrative and coaching offices, and the destination of thousands of visitors each year.
Now, as part of the strategic plan for Princeton Athletics, the Jadwin Gym main lobby will be getting a facelift.
"Our student-athletes compete at the very highest levels nationally, and we must continue to reinforce their efforts by providing facilities and support commensurate with their talents and dedication," said Ford Family Director of Athletics Mollie Marcoux Samaan '91.
"We are committed to continuing to provide world-class training and playing facilities and public spaces that inspire great pride in Princeton Athletics and allow our student-athletes to hone their skills and reach their peak potential in the classroom, in their athletic venues and in the community," said Marcoux Samaan.
The new Jadwin Gym Lobby and adjacent hallways will display archival and modern photographs showcasing the University's highly successful athletic history, feature upgraded ticketing facilities and new gathering spaces for visitors, and will provide student-athletes with a state-of-the-art "fueling station" to allow for proper nutrition and hydration before and after training.
A gift from Andrew J. Conner Esq. '62 made much of the Jadwin Gym Lobby project possible. As an undergraduate, Conner lettered in football and was a participant in both golf and track & field. The newly created "Conner Lounge" will be dedicated in memory of distinguished scholar-athlete Daniel M. Sachs '60 and all members of the Princeton Athletics family who courageously lost battles with cancer.
"There were two reasons why I wanted to make this gift to Princeton Athletics," Conner said.
"First, I have tremendous respect for the athletes who represent Princeton and those who work with them, and I am a firm believer in the motto of Education through Athletics and what it suggests and represents. As such, I wanted to try to help make the primary athletic venue worthy of the people who compete there and the people who go there to support them.
"Second, I wanted this generation and subsequent generations to know who Danny Sachs was. As we approach the 50th anniversary of his tragic passing due to cancer at the age of 23, I want to keep alive his memory and the legacy of his great academic and athletic achievements and, more importantly, for being a wonderful person."
Additional generous support for this project is provided by several alumni and other Princeton Athletics supporters.
"I would like to thank Andy for his leadership and support of the project in Jadwin Gymnasium," Marcoux Samaan said. "His generosity, as well as that of other project donors, will greatly enhance the experience of all of our student-athletes and provide the funding to properly recognize and celebrate the contributions of so many great Princetonians. The enhancements to the lobby will provide for a greater fan and game-day experience for all Tiger supporters."
James Bradberry Architects has been selected as the architect for the project and Gallagher Design has been selected to enhance the graphics and design of the space. Bradberry has a deep understanding of Princeton University, having led design on many spaces on campus, including planned renovations at Hobey Baker Rink. Gallagher Designs has an established track record of creating inspiring and innovative spaces, most notably through their longstanding working relationship with Nike, Inc. and the University of Oregon.
The renovations are slated for completion in Fall '17.
