Men's Volleyball Announces 2017 Schedule, Earns Top-10 Rank Among Recruiting Classes
October 08, 2016 | Men's Volleyball
After completing a successful summer as head coach of the USA Youth National Team, Princeton volleyball head coach Sam Shweisky is already excited to get the 2017 Tiger men's volleyball season underway. While he put together another challenging schedule to test the Tigers for EIVA competition, but he brought in the seventh-ranked recruiting class in the NCAA.
The 2017 Tiger season will begin in, of all places, Honolulu; Princeton will compete in the 23rd annual Outrigger Tournament, opening Jan. 5 against Ball State. Princeton will face a pair of teams that made it to the final weekend of the 2016 NCAA season (BYU and UCLA), and it will open its annual California week with a match at UCLA.
Here are Shweisky's thoughts on the 2017 schedule:
"We are so excited to make the trip out to Hawaii to play in the prestigious 23rd annual Outrigger Tournament. It is a great honor to have been invited and we can't wait to experience the great culture of Hawaii as well as the high level volleyball. Hawaiians are known for being knowledgeable fans, and we can't wait to play in the historic Stan Sherriff Center. The last time Princeton Volleyball played in that arena was in the 1998 NCAA semifinal against Pepperdine. This tournament is a great opportunity to play against a top MPSF team in Hawaii, a top MIVA team in Ball State, and a top Conference Carolina team in Barton.
Our annual intersession trip to Southern California will yet again include a great mix of teams with NCAA third-place finisher UCLA, UC-San Diego, and Concordia. Heading to California in January is always a great trip and nice time to enjoy the California sunshine!
As for our spring break trip, it is equally exciting as we head to Provo to play NCAA runner-up BYU and then over to top MIVA foe Grand Canyon for a double header. It will be a great week of high level volleyball and beautiful scenery."
Shweisky brought in a highly rated quartet of freshmen to comprise his Class of 2020, and plenty have taken notice at the talent influx inside Dillon Gym. His incoming class was recently ranked seventh in the nation — second in the EIVA — by VolleyballMag.com. You can read the release here.
