Newell Drafted in First NWHL Entry Draft

BOSTON (6/25/15) - Rising Princeton senior Kimberly Newell was taken by the New York Riveters as the first pick of the fifth round in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) inaugural Entry Draft held at the Bright-Landy Center on Saturday, June 20.
Newell was the the 17th overall pick and first in Round 5. She was one of three goaltenders selected in the draft.
Those eligible for the draft are those that have completed their junior seasons at a four-year college. After completing her college career, the drafted player can then sign with the team that selected her or opt into free agency and sign with any of the other three teams. Any player who is eligible to be selected is not drafted becomes a free agent after her senior year.
The NWHL free agency period ends on August 17 this year, with rosters being finalized shortly thereafter.
The draft consisted of five rounds, with each flagshop franchise selecting five total players.
