PRINCETON, N.J. – The 19th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team gave No. 1 Syracuse all it could handle before ultimately falling to the Orange at J.S. Coyne Stadium, 4-2.
Down 1-0 at the intermission, Syracuse netted four second half goals to improve to 15-0 on the season. Dropping to 7-5 (4-0 Ivy) on the year, the Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Harvard.
Generating the game's first scoring opportunity, Princeton earned a penalty corner in the fourth minute. After sending the insert to the top of the circle, Sophia Tornetta made a run toward the left post. Playing a ball toward the cage, Teresa Benvenuti narrowly missed linking up with Tornetta as the senior's feed veered just wide of the left post.
Despite earning a penalty corner of its own in the 12th minute, Syracuse struggled to gain traction against the Princeton defense. Pouncing on an Orange turnover in the 28th minute, Jane Donio-Enscoe and Cat Caro put a pair of shots on target, forcing a couple of Jess Jecko saves.
With Syracuse once again unable to get a shot on goal on its second penalty corner of the contest in the 31st minute, Princeton countered. Moving into the offensive zone, Caro played a long ball from the right side into the circle. Forced to make a save, Jecko tried to kick the rebound out, but Donio-Enscoe ultimately came up with it on the near post, putting in her second goal of the season at 31:52 to give the Tigers a lead heading into the intermission.
Pushing forward early in the second half, Syracuse earned a penalty corner in the 42nd minute. Ending up with the Emma Russell insert, Laura Hurff looked to goal, but sent a shot wide of the right post. Continuing to apply pressure in the 45th minute, Alma Fenne held the ball on the left side of the circle before sending a pass across the face of the goal that just hopped over the stick of a waiting Russell on the backpost.
In the 47th minute, Syracuse finally broke through. Getting the play started, Roos Weers sent a long hit from the left side into the middle of the circle. Redirecting the feed toward the net, Russell tucked a high shot under the crossbar at 46:54 to make it 1-1.
Just 4:51 later the Orange pulled in front. Jumpstarting another Syracuse penalty corner, Russell inserted to the top of the circle. Moving to her right, Lies Lagerweij slipped a pass back to Weers, who quickly turned and backhanded the go-ahead goal past Anya Gersoff at 51:45.
Going back on the offensive, the Tigers tied things up in the 56th minute. Setting up the equalizer, George played in Ryan McCarthy, who beat Jecko with a shot at the left post.
Answering on the other end, Syracuse needed just 1:19 to break the deadlock. Putting a long shot on goal, Hurff forced a Gersoff save before putting back her own rebound at 56:27. Alyssa Manley capped off the scoring with a successful penalty stroke in the 64th minute.
Syracuse finished with a 17-11 shot advantage and a 6-2 edge in penalty corners. Gersoff finished with six saves, while Jecko had five stops.
