The Princeton softball team won a pair of games Sunday in Baltimore, defeating Mount St. Mary's 4-2 before routing host UMBC in a 12-2 win.

The Tigers are 6-3 and have their best record through nine games since the 2006 team was also 6-3 at this point.

Princeton jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Mount St. Mary's (1-12) during a three-hit first inning that included an RBI single from Alex Peyton and a two-RBI double from Candy Button. Tory Roberts then led off the second inning with a home run for the fourth run.

Mount St. Mary's mounted a rally in the seventh inning against Liza Kuhn (2-0), but could only halve the deficit. Kuhn gave up just four hits, walking four and earning both runs. She struck out five in the win. At the plate, Alyssa Schmidt led Princeton with three of the team's seen hits.

Against UMBC (4-12), Princeton scored 11 runs over the final two innings to pull away.

Princeton got an RBI double from Schmidt in the first inning but saw UMBC get a run apiece in the third and fourth innings against Alex Peyton (2-2) to pull ahead 2-1.

That lead lasted for the Retrievers until Princeton took advantage of seven hits, seven walks, a hit batter and three UMBC errors to score 11 runs over the last two frames.

Ten Tigers contributed to a season-high 14 hits, with Schmidt going 4 for 6 to finish 7 for 10 on the day. On the season, Schmidt is hitting .514 (19-37).

Princeton will return to Baltimore next weekend for five games against Hampton, UMBC and Coppin State in another UMBC-Coppin State co-hosted event.
