PRINCETON, N.J. (12/9/12) - In her collegiate debut freshman Julia Ratcliffe set a
Princeton record in the women's weight throw to win the event at the New Year's
Invitational at Jadwin Gym on Sunday, Dec. 9.
Ratcliffe threw to 19.58 (64-3) taking down the previous
mark of 19.21 (63-0.25) held by Thanithia Billings '11 that was set at this
same meet in 2011.
The Tigers won a number of events in the middle of the
track. Junior Imani Oliver claimed victory in the triple jump reaching 11.75
(38-6.75), jumping more than a foot further than the rest of the field.
Senior Tory Worthen continues her dominance in the pole
vault with her first win of the season. She cleared 3.80 (12-5.50) and
classmate Lauren Tauscher was third at 3.50 (11-5.75).
Freshman Taylor Morgan took home the win in the high jump as
she cleared 1.75 (5-8.75) in her collegiate debut.
Freshman Sarah Lavin did double duty, qualifying for the
finals of both the 60 and 60m hurdles. Lavin won the hurdles at 8.55 after
running a 8.66 in the preliminary round, which was also the fastest time out of
the 36 competitors in the qualifying round. Lavin went on to take second in the
60 at 7.59. Seniors Erin Guty and Abidemi Adenikinju also reached the finals
and were fourth and eighth, respectively.
Guty was the runner-up in the long jump, reaching 5.71
(18-9). Freshman Sara Ronde took fifth with a jump of 5.40 (17-8.75).
In the distance events, junior Kristin Smoot won the mile at
5:01.59. Senior Melissa Zajdel dominated the 1,000. She ran a 2:55.95 to win by
nearly 10 seconds faster than the rest of the competition. Sophomore Rachel Skokowski followed in third place at 3:05.46 and freshman Michelle Tracy was
fifth at 3:07.13.
It was a tight finish in the 600 but sophomore Cecilia Barowski was nudged out of the win by 0.35 seconds as she crossed the line at
1:30.64. Classmate Kim Mackay was fourth at 1:37.33 and sophomore Emily Broyles
was sixth at 1:38.66. In the 300, senior captain Joie Hand clocked a 41.09 to
finish in third place. Junior Carrie Vuong was eighth at 42.11.
Hand, Barowski, Boyles and freshman Meghan McMullin made up
the 4x400 that finished second. The relay ran 3:55.61 and was followed by the B
relay of Vuong, Smoot, Zajdel and Mackay at 3:57.56 for fourth place.
Princeton resumes competition on Friday, Jan. 11 when it
hosts the annual Princeton Quad Meet.
