In a battle for sole possession of first place in the Ivy
League, the No. 3 Princeton field hockey team overpowered Columbia, 8-0, Friday
evening in New York City. The Tigers earned their second consecutive conference
shutout victory and improved to 8-1, 3-0 Ivy, while dropping the
Lions to 6-3, 2-1 Ivy.
Princeton took control immediately and managed possession
for nearly the entire 70-minute contest. Michelle Cesan opened up action with a
goal at 6:21, as she dribbled the ball through the left side past Columbia's
goalie Christie O'Hara.
Two minutes later Katie Reinprecht took an ensuing
drive into the circle and fired off a shot, but it was blocked. Allison Evans
would be there to pick up the ball and make it a 2-0 match.
Goals continued to come in two minutes increments for
Princeton, as Evans notched her second consecutive goal at 10:10. Reinprecht
connected with Evans again, as she received a cross from the right side of the
cage and shot it in past a diving O'Hara.
Play remained in the Columbia half of the field, as
Princeton prevented the Lions from finding any successful movement in its
circle. While the defense deflected all of Columbia's attempts, the offense
continued to extend its lead. Kathleen Sharkey added to her already incredible
scoring total, sending in her 18th goal of the year off a penalty corner served
up by Julia Reinprecht and K. Reinprecht, her third dish of the evening.
In her return to the collegiate pitch after missing the last
five games with the U.S. Junior National Team, sophomore Sydney Kirby made her
presence known. The midfielder sent in a shot that was saved by O'Hara, but was
able to possess the deflected ball and send in her first goal of the year in
the 22nd minute.
Also notching their first goal of the year was Stephanie
Goldberg, who received a cross from Evans on the left side to send Princeton in
with a 6-0 lead at halftime.
At the break, the Tigers held a 20-0 shot advantage, with 15
being on frame.
Following intermission, Princeton saw its third first-time
scorer see the back of the net. This time it was freshman Debi-Michelle Jantzen
scoring her first career goal off an Allegra Mango assist at 46:12.
Columbia managed to finally send in a shot in the 56th
minute. The Lions would tally eight shots in the second half, three of which
were on frame, but second half Tiger keeper Julia Boyle deflected them all.
Boyle and starting goalie Christina Maida would combine for the shutout in the
match.
Sharkey wrapped up the game adding her second goal, off an
unassisted drive and shot near the top of the circle.
Princeton would conclude the game with a 28-8 shot
differential and 20-3 on goal advantage. Both sides would end with eight
penalty corners apiece.
The Tigers return home to host another top-five opponent in
No. 4 Maryland on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
