LINKS: Box Score

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (3/15/11) - The Princeton baseball team hung tough with 15th-ranked North Carolina through eight innings before the Tar Heels broke open the game late in an 11-2 win on Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Kevin Link allowed two runs in six innings in the loss, while Sam Mulroy hit his second home run of the season at the plate.

The game started as a pitcher's duel between Link and North Carolina's Cody Stiles. UNC pushed across a run on Link in the second inning when Jesse Wierzbicki hit a solo home run. Link held UNC at bay until the sixth inning when Ben Bunting singled in Seth Baldwin.

Princeton got on the scoreboard in the following inning when Mulroy led off the frame with a solo homer. Stiles got the next two batters out but then gave up singles to Alex Flink and Alec Keller as Princeton brought the tying run to second base. At that point the Tar Heels brought in closer Cody Penny, who got the final out of the inning. Princeton also put two on with two outs in the eighth inning on a Matt Bowman single and a Mulroy walk.

North Carolina broke the game open in the eighth inning as nine runs scored on seven hits and one Princeton error. Princeton added a final run in the ninth inning as Flink walked and later scored on a sac fly from Jonathan York.

Link suffered the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings. David Palms and Matt Grabowski were tagged for nine runs over the final two innings. Stiles scattered five hits and a run in 6.2 innings.

Princeton is now 2-6 overall and continues its Spring Break trip on Wednesday evening at UNC Greensboro. A.J. Goetz will make his first career start.
