PRINCETON, N.J. (5/10/09) – It’s been a long time coming. But the time arrived on Sunday, May 10 at Franklin Field, as the Princeton women’s track and field team won the Ivy League Heptagonal for the first time since 1998.

With five events left Princeton and Cornell were tied with 112 points. The Tigers took the lead after a strong finish in the 3,000-meter run, going ahead by 145-130, with only two events remaining, the 4x400 and the 4x800. After the first relay, Princeton went up 146-130 to earn the win, as Cornell couldn’t make up 16 points in the final event although the Big Red did win the 4x800 to earn 10 points.

Princeton finished with 153 points and Cornell had 146. Columbia was third with 107, followed by Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn and Yale.

Junior Liz Costello won the 3000 clocking in at 9:45.36 about two seconds faster than the runner-up from Harvard. Sophomores Ashley Higginson and Sarah Cummings were third and fourth at 9:47.30 and 9:49.37.

Costello finished second in the 1500 at 4:27.46 with senior Alexe Smith taking fifth at 4:24.46, a total of 10 points.

The Tigers dominate the top slots in the 5000, taking second, third and fourth places. Cummings was second at 16:44.10, sophomore Alex Banfich at 16:51.65 and junior Reilly Kiernan at 16:53.74.

Senior Agatha Offorjebe and Cornell’s Sharay Hale battled it out in the 200 and 400 yesterday in the preliminaries with Hale posting the better times in both events. Today was a different story, as Offorjebe won the 200 with a time of 24.09, while Hale came in at 24.11. Hale won the 400, with Offorjebe coming in second at 55.08, to personally give Princeton 18 points.

Higginson won the steeplechase in a time of 10:24.98. Teammate Liz Deir came in fourth at 10:49.74, to take 14 points away from the event. This is the second straight year Princeton won the event.

Sophomore Thanithia Billings earned a third-place finish in the shot put reaching 14.41 meters. Senior Emma Giunipero was fourth in the discus, throwing to 44.57 meters. The two combined to give Princeton 10 points towards the team total.

In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore Lauren Barber took third place finished at 14.29, just three-hundredths of a second behind the second-place competitor.

Freshman Eileen Moran finished the 100-meter dash in 12.20 to take third place and sixth in the 200 to give Princeton seven points towards the team total.

Also adding points to Princeton’s team total was sophomore Libby Bliss in the 800.

Sophomore KC Wade finished the heptathlon with 4,171 points for eighth place.

In the relays, the Tigers were third in the 4x100 at 47.69, seventh in the 4x400 at 3:58.01 and eighth in the 4x800 at 9:07.62.

Princeton will host the ECAC Championship next weekend at Weaver Stadium.
