The Princeton baseball team split its doubleheader on Sunday with Columbia, remaining two games behind the Lions in the Gehrig Division standings. Columbia won an 8-0 game in the opener, before Princeton took the nightcap 11-4.

Game 1

Columbia’s Joe Scarlata scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings to blank Princeton 8-0 in the opening game of the doubleheader. His team gave him an early lead with two runs in the first and six in the second inning.

Ron Williams and Bobby O’Brien each drove in two for the Lions as Williams singled in a run in the first and plated a run with a sac fly in the second. O’Brien drove in two with a double in the second inning.

Princeton junior starter David Hale was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on five hits in one and a third innings of work. Sophomore Chad Ohlendorf and junior Ross Staine each had scoreless outing of relief.

Game 2

The Tigers used three home runs in the nightcap to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and pull away for the seven-run win. Junior Jon Broscious hit two homers in the game and drove in three runs.

Alex Aurrichio put Columbia up 1-0 in the second inning on a solo home run, but Princeton bounced back in the third inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. Broscious doubled to lead off the inning and then scored when sophomore Matt Connor singled to even the score. Connor was then erased from the base paths on a fielder’s choice, but the Tigers put another on and went ahead when junior Jack Murphy hit a 3-2 pitch for a three-run home run.

Princeton expended its lead with two runs in the fourth on a Broscious blast and made it 8-1 in the fifth when runs scored on a wild pitch and a ground out. Princeton ran its lead to 9-1 in the sixth when Connor, who singled in the inning and had three hit in the game, scored on a wild pitch.

Columbia scratched two runs back in the seventh inning, but Princeton regained those runs in the eighth inning when Broscious led off with a solo home run and Connor scored on a balk.

Princeton senior starter Brad Gemberling improved to 4-1 with the win. He allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings, while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Geoff Whitaker, who allowed six runs in four innings for the Lions took the loss.

Princeton moved to 10-15 overall and 3-7 in the Ivy League, while Columbia is now 8-22 overall and 5-5 in the Ivy League. Princeton remains two games back of the Lions in the Gehrig Division standings. The teams will make up Saturday’s rained out doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
