PRINCETON -- Senior Steven Miller and sophomore David Hale each turned in strong pitching performances as the Princeton baseball team swept an Ivy League doubleheader from Harvard at Clarke Field. Princeton won the opener 3-2 and came from behind to take the nightcap 6-5.

Game 1

Four of the five combined runs in the first game came in the opening inning as Harvard jumped to a 1-0 lead when Matt Vance walked, stole second and scored on a Harry Douglas double. Princeton countered in the bottom of the inning with three runs as double from sophomore Jack Murphy plated sophomore Dan DeGeorge and a triple by senior Micah Kaplan scored Murphy and senior Spencer Lucian.

Harvard added a run in the top of the seventh and got the tying run aboard, but Hale got the groundout he needed to seal the win. Hale pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out nine. Lucian had two of Princeton’s six hits in the game.

Game 2

Neither team was able to score in the first three runs on the nightcap, before the teams combined for nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Princeton had 11 hits in the game, but fell behind in the fourth when Taylor Meehan hit an opposite field solo home run.

The Tigers got two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take the lead. With two outs, junior Eric Zaziski hit an infield single to score Lucian, then sophomore Noel Gonzales-Luna single through the right side to plate sophomore Jon Broscious.

Harvard regained the lead right away with four runs in the fifth as the Crimson took advantage of four hits and two Tiger errors to take a 5-2 lead. All four hits were singles and two of the runs were unearned.

Princeton clawed two of the runs back in the fifth when junior Adrian Turnham hit a double off the wall in right center with two on. The Tigers then evened the score in the seventh when DeGeorge hit a one-out triple and scored on a Turnham sac fly.

The final run came one inning later when Lucian hit a leadoff double and scored when Kaplan singled through the left side.

Harvard had one last chance in the top of the ninth as they put two on, but Miller got a final groundout to end the game. Miller pitched all nine innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out seven.

Princeton is now 10-11 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League. Princeton visits Monmouth this Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
