PHILADELPHIA -- The Princeton baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday at Penn to move a game ahead of Cornell and Columbia in the Gehrig Division standings. Princeton won the opening game 5-4 in nine innings, then took the nightcap 7-4.

Princeton never trailed in the opening game, but after the Quakers rallied from a three-run deficit to force extra innings, the Tigers were able to pull out a one-run win in nine innings to run their win streak to five games.

Princeton jumped ahead in the first inning when an infield single from junior Jon Broscious plated senior Dan DeGeorge. Penn countered in the bottom of the first inning when Dan Williams plated a run with a sac fly.

Princeton went back ahead with two runs in the second inning. Senior Adrian Turnham led off with a walk and scored on freshman Sam Mulroy’s double and then Mulroy came home on senior Derek Beckman’s single. Princeton’s lead was extended to 4-1 in the fourth inning when Beckman, who reached when he was hit by a pitch, scored on a DeGeorge double.

Penn rallied back in the game with two runs in the sixth inning and one in the bottom of the seventh. In the sixth, William Gordon and Adrian Lorenzo each drove in runs and Derek Vigoa’s double scored the tying run with two outs in the seventh.

Neither team threatened in the eighth before the Tigers went ahead with a run in the ninth. Broscious led off with a single and advanced to second when junior Brian Berkowitz by hit by a pitch. A sac bunt moved the runners and Broscious came home on a groundout from sophomore Matt Connor.

Sophomore Matt Grabowski retired all six batters he faced for the win, striking out six. He came on for junior David Hale, who surrendered four runs on eight hits over seven innings.

The Tigers took the nightcap 7-4 behind an eight-inning, 10 strikeout performance from senior starting pitcher Brad Gemberling. Sophomore Greg Van Horn homered twice in the win and drove in three runs.

Princeton methodically built up a 5-0 lead with runs over the first five innings. Van Horn scored an unearned run in the first inning and Junior Jack Murphy drove in one with a sac fly in the third. The Tigers added two in the fourth as senior Dan DeGeorge, who had five hits in the game, singled in a run. Van Horn then made it 5-0 when he led off the fifth with a solo homer.

Penn chipped runs off the lead in the seventh and eighth innings to move within three, but the Tigers broke things open with two runs in the ninth when Van Horn hit a two-run homer to give Princeton a five-run advantage. Penn added two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Gemberling improved to 4-1 with the win. Freshman Ryan Makis pitched the final inning.

Princeton moved to 15-15 overall with the wins and is now 7-7 in the Ivy League. The Tigers moved a game ahead of both Cornell and Columbis in the Gehrig Division standings as the teams split. Princeton visits Penn again tomorrow afternoon for two games.
