Freshman Maria Elena Ubina Reaches CSA Quarters, Falls In Marathon Thriller

Freshman Maria Elena Ubina made a strong run at the CSA semifinals Saturday, but her upset bid fell just short. Fourth-ranked Anaka Alankamony of Penn held on through a five-game thriller in a showdown of two of the Ivy League's best newcomers.

Ubina, Princeton's No. 1 player this season, tried to avenge a 3-1 loss to Alankamony during the regular season. She came out with an 11-7 victory in the opener, and then forced a fifth game with an 11-8 win in the fourth. Though the final game would be tight, Penn's Alankamony held on for an 11-7 win.

That ended Princeton's run through the 'A' draw, as both senior Libby Eyre and junior Nicole Bunyan fell in second-round consolation matches. Eyre opened the day with a 3-2 comeback win in her first match; she trailed 2-0, but followed with wins of 11-7, 11-9 and 12-10 to reach the consolation semifinals. Unfortunately, that match had an effect against Penn No. 2 Yan Xin Tan, who defeated Eyre in three games.

Bunyan made Yale No. 2 Kimberley Hay work for a four-game win. Bunyan split the first two games, including her 11-8 win in the second, but fell 11-6 and 11-9 in the next two games.

Both freshman Alexandra Toth and sophomore Tara Harrington picked up at least one win apiece in the Holleran Division, though both were eliminated, ending Princeton's chances for back-to-back champions in the 'B' flight.
